What Exactly IS Proofreading?
I know, I know...this seems like a purely rhetorical question thrown in here to fill up space. However, in the years I have been proofreading, I have found this to be a gray area for a lot of people and one that warrants clarification.

Proofreading is the last step in the editorial process and ensures that your hard work is error-free and ready to shine for your buyers. My proofreading process consists of checking:
-
Checking for Typos
-
Checking for Grammatical Errors
-
Checking for Misspelled Words
-
Checking for Double Words
-
Checking for Formatting Issues
-
Checking for Correct Sequencing of Chapter and Page Numbers
On the flip side, my proofreading does not consist of:
-
Fact-Checking
-
Checking Voice and Style
-
Checking the Plot or Setting
-
Reviewing the Overall Structure
-
Verifying Accurate Timelines
-
Verifying Table of Contents, Footnotes, and Bibliographies
-
Checking Sentence Structure

So, What is Editing Then?
There are three main types of editing:

-
Developmental/Content Editing
-
Line Editing
-
Copyediting

Developmental Editing focuses on the story itself: the plot, the characters, the theme, the setting, and point of view. This is typically the first step in the editing process.
Line Editing focuses on the writing style and flow, and looks for issues such as passive writing, showing vs. telling, and issues in phrasing or dialogue. Line editing is typically done after developmental editing, although it is sometimes performed in conjunction with developmental editing.
Copyediting focuses on the mechanics of the writing. In addition to correcting spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation errors, copyediting also focuses on consistency within the document. A copyeditor also ensures that the correct style guide is followed and that the material is scrubbed for clarity and readability. Fact-checking, when needed, is also a part of this process. This is typically the last step in the editing process and comes before proofreading.

One thing that I've discovered throughout my freelancing career is that when it comes to proofreading, the sky is the limit! I recently proofread the lyrics of a song and have previously worked on party invitations, dissertations, newspaper articles, job applications, permission slips, resumes, training materials, and more. So, if you have a project that needs to be proofed and it doesn't fit in one of the above categories, go ahead and contact me so that we can discuss your needs in greater detail. I love taking on new projects and will be happy to customize my pricing based on your unique project.

I'm also a proud volunteer for Project Gutenberg, which is a website dedicated to making books that are no longer in print available to the public again as e-books. There are over 70,000 free e-books available. The volunteer proofreading is done through Distributed Proofreaders and is completed for a wide range of genres.
